Bangalore: Medium of Instructions: Government Stands Its Ground

Bangalore, May 29: Toughening his stand against the unaided private schools that have gone ahead with their plans of imparting education in English without heeding to his advice, state primary and secondary education minister Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri reiterated that the government will initiate strong action against the erring schools.

While admitting that the state High Court order had gone in favour of the schools, he informed, the government is pursuing the appeal filed by it in the Supreme Court against the High Court order. If the Supreme Court verdict comes against the state government, it will then consider other options to ensure that the school managements will not teach the students in English, he revealed. The government can under no circumstances, allow these schools to have English as their medium of instruction, he added.

Former central Kannada Sahitya Parishat president Prof Chandrashekhar Patil and other activists of Swabhimani Karnataka Vedike including P V Narayan and B T Lalita Nayak have supported the government's stand in this regard. The Vedike leaders said, they have already lodged a complaint with legislative council chairman Veeranna Mattikatti against deputy chairman Puttanna, who has been supporting the stand of private school managements.

Prof Patil said that they have asked the legislative council chairman to ask the deputy chairman to resign from his post, before making statements against the interests of Kannada.
