Udupi, May 31: Dr S P Mohanty, a well-known orthopaedic surgeon, inaugurated a programme on the occasion of ‘World Tobacco Day’, by unveiling the sand art created by the Sand Artists’ Forum member Venky Palimar, Srinat Manipal, and Ravi Hirebettu here on Sunday May 31.

The programme was organized under the aegis of the Shirdi Sai Baba Cancer Hospital, Manipal, and a tobacco awareness sculpture was displayed on its premises.

Dr Vidyasagar of radio therapy and oncology department provided information on the ills of tobacco consumption.

A banner on the evils of tobacco was displayed and handbills were distributed on the same occasion.

Dr B M Vadiraj, associate professor of radio therapy and oncology, was also present.

The sand art conveyed the miserable life of smokers and all those who consume tobacco-related products.  It also cautioned the tobacco addicts that they will have to bear its agony throughout their life like that of a scorpion bite.
