Abu Dhabi, Jul 31: The country's top court has ruled that the family of the electrician who died after falling from the rooftop while on duty, shall be paid Dh 200,000 in blood money. The contracting company was found guilty of causing death of the worker due to its failure to comply with safety requirements.

Court of Cassation has upheld the rulings of Criminal Court of First Instance and the Appeal Court, which earlier found the contracting firm guilty, and has ordered the Asian man's employer to pay the blood money in addition to a fine of Dh 35,000.

As reported in Khaleej Times, the official court documents stated that the man was doing some welding work on the rooftop of a newly constructed house in the capital, when he accidentally slipped and fell to the ground, along with the machine he was using and died on the spot. A probe was conducted by the Abu Dhabi police, which found that the man was not qualified to do welding work and there were no protection barriers on the rooftop and the worker was not wearing safety clothes while on duty.

During trial, the prosecutors charged the contracting firm with negligence and not complying with safety and security requirements, causing death of the worker.
