Mangalore: Nagarika Seva Trust Irked by DC's Remark on Environmentalists

Mangalore, Jun 12: Guruvayanakare Nagarika Seva Trust has raised strong objections to certain comments made by Dakshina Kannada district deputy commissioner Ponnuraj. At the environment day programme held here recently, the deputy commissioner had questioned the credibility and sincerity of the movements being undertaken by self-styled environmentalists.

"If we study the backgrounds of those who oppose development projects in the name of environmental protection, we will come to know the real motive," the deputy commissioner had commented.

Trust president Somanath Nayak wanted to know as to what environment-related studies were conducted by the deputy commissioner. "The deputy commissioner has advised people to take a leaf from the activities of Baba Amte. Has he read the books authored by Shivaram Karanth?" Nayak questioned.

Many noble people from Uttara Kannada and Dakshina Kannada districts have made valuable contribution to environment conservation. For us, the lives of those who fought vigorously for the conservation of our land, water bodies and culture, not of Ponnuraj, who has come here recently, are important, he added in a release.

    I fully support the views of the Nagarika Seva Trust. It should be noted that to work for public cause no one gives you mamool !The background of not only who oppose the destruction of nature should be seen but also those supporting them so that a fair balance can be maintained. No one pays you to become a Baba Amte or Shivaram Karanth. But it always pays to discourage people from becoming like Baba Amte or Shivarama Karanth! But it should be remembered that we live here - in this area and it is no wrong to fight for our cause- no matter one likes it or not.

    Somanath Nayak has no moral rights to comment on DC,s environmental concern. Nayaks is concerned only to make money from abroad by protesting against development of the region.
