Udupi, Jun 22: The thieves, who gained entry into Majoor Lord Adi Vishnumurthy temple and Goddess Durga Parameshwari temple in Uyilar near Kaup on the night of Saturday June 20, took away donation boxes. In the case of Vishnumurthy temple, threw away the donation box, having been failed in their attempts to break it open.  In the case of Durga Parameshwari temple, besides the donation box, they have taken away cash amounting to about Rs 5,000 kept in a cupboard there.

The thieves entered Majoor temple by removing the roof tiles. The donation box of the temple was found abandoned besides the nearby rivulet.  They had taken the box outside through the rear door, and it is thought that they decided to leave behind the donation box, upon their failure to open it. The theft came to light when the temple priest Pundarikaksha Bhat came to the temple in the morning.

In the case of Uliyar temple too, the thieves had gained entry through the tiled roof. After breaking open the donation box, they ransacked other things around, broke open a cupboard located in the premises, sifted through the contents and took away about Rs 5,000 kept inside.

While going back, the thieves had made use of the temple chairs and there are striking similarities between both the incidents. Based on complaints made by the priests of the temples concerned, Kaup policemen have registered cases.
