Mangalore, Jun 24: Netravati (28) who stayed in a rented house along with her husband at Haleangadi village near Mulky resorted to immolation, presumably because of the harassment she had been going through at the hands of her husband.
The local people, who heard the lady screaming at around 2 am on Tuesday June 23, called the policemen. She was immediately taken to the hospital, but breathed her last by day-break. Netravati had poured kerosene on herself before torching herself.
Her husband Surendra Achary, a native of Muroor in Karkala, is a carpenter by proession. In a complaint filed with the Mulky police, Lalita, mother of Netravati, has accused Achary of meting out harassment to his wife as a result of which, she claimed her daughter had committed suicide. The deceased is survived by a three-year old daughter.
The policemen have taken Surendra Achary into custody for questioning. Investigation is on.
