Coastal, Malnad Regions to get `Moderate to Heavy’ rains in 10 Days

BANGALORE, JUN 25: Coastal and Malnad regions of Karnataka will receive ``moderate to heavy rainfall’’ in the next 10 days, Karnataka’s revenue minister G Karunakar Reddy said on Thursday.
Indian Meteorological Department and International Research Institute for Climate and Society of Columbia University, US, have forecast that there would be moderate to heavy rainfall in coastal and Malnad belt in the next 10 days, he said.
Reddy, who is also chairman of cabinet sub-committee on drought, was addressing a news conference after a meeting with Agriculture minister S A Ravindranath and Minor Irrigation minister Govind Karjol for a review of the kharif sowing operations in the state.
Coastal belt had been receiving rains and good rainfall would raise the water level in Linganamakki and other hydel reservoirs, which would ease the electricity problem, Reddy said quoting reports from Udupi and Mangalore. Allaying fears of drought in the State, he said the State received deficit rainfall of 5 % so far with rainfall of 136 mm from June 2 to June 24.
The kharif sowing was satisfactory compared to last year and sowing had taken place on 21.19 lakh hectares as on June 22 against 13 lakh hectares in June last year.
He, however, made it clear that there was no shortage of fodder and said a sum of Rs 7 crores had been released to districts to stock fodder. Deputy Commissioners had been authorised to take suitable measures to see that there would not be shortage of fodder supply, tbe minister added.
