Mangalore: Insufficient Rains - People Tottering under Unscheduled Load Shedding

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Jun 27: The top management of Karnataka Power Corporation had warned last week, that the water levels in the  reservoirs feeding the  hydel power generators in the state are at the levels never witnessed during the last ten years, and that if the gloomy situation continues, hydel power generation in the state might be suspended.

True to the warning, the catchment areas of the reservoirs have been receiving scant rains. Perhaps as a result, people of the twin-districts have been reeling under unscheduled power cuts extending upto eight hours daily. In the past, power used to get severed because of the vagaries of the monsoon. However, this time the reason for power cut is the lower levels in the water reservoirs in the state.

As the state has affected about 50% cut over the power being supplied to the coastal districts since the last four days,  Mescom has been forced to cut off power supply at unearthly hours, for unstipulated periods. Mescom sources have said that, unless rainfall in the catchment areas of the reservoirs improves, the situation might turn gloomier in the coming weeks.
