Andhra Congress MP Slaps Bank Manager

PTI

Hyderabad, Jul 1: Congress MP from Nagarkurnool in Andhra Pradesh M Jagannath on Tuesday found himself in a spot after he allegedly slapped a bank manager in Mahabubnagar district, following which the bank union threatened to step up its protests.

Jagannath allegedly slapped Ravinder Reddy, manager of a local branch of Andhra Pradesh Grameen Vikas Bank, for not releasing the loan amount to SC/ST beneficiaries for the last six months at Uppununtala in the district, official sources said.

The MP alleged that the manager gave an improper reply when he called him up during a meeting of the mandal officials and public representatives to find out the reasons for not distributing the loans to the SC/ST beneficiaries.

Dissatisfied over the manager's reply, Jagannath headed to the bank from the mandal committee meeting and in the argument that followed, Jagannath allegedly slapped Reddy.

Footage aired by a news channel showed the ruling party lawmaker slapping the bank manager more than once.

"Can he speak to me in the language which he did? He was drunk heavily. If he was taken to the hospital, it would have been proved," the MP claimed.

However, the bank manager said Jagannath's behaviour is not befitting to the position held by him.

"He could have complained to my bosses if I am negligent in discharging my duties. This is not the way," Reddy said. The manager complained to the police against the Lok Sabha MP.

The police filed a case against the MP under IPC Sections 353 (assault or use of criminal force to deter a public servant from discharge of his duty), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) and 504 (insulting), a police official said.

A counter case was filed against the bank manager under the Prevention of Atrocities Against SC/STs by one Vijay and one Bakkaiah, he said.

Meanwhile, the AP Regional Rural Banks Employees Association (APRRBEA) demanded that the MP express regret for his action and also assure that such "scenes in future" won't recur from his end.

As a mark of protest, all the staff in the rural branches were wearing black badges and staged demonstrations before offices of District Collectors, a release issued by the association said.

The association said it would take up the matter with Prime Minister, Lok Sabha Speaker and the chief minister.

The bank union threatened to stop disbursal of loans as a mark of protest till action was initiated against the MP.

I don''t support the MP... but it is a wake up call to the bank officials who act as theough they own the nation and behave any way they want. I am sure hundreds of people have experienced this attitude from Bank officials. The have to be accountable and they have to be answerable. It will be interesting to dig up and see the severity of the situation which led to the slapping incident. Well, MP needs to be condemned fo rlosing control of the situation and maligning the dignity of the democratic institution.

If we start digging at MPs short coming at his territory, and if anyone found that MP has not done enough in his constituency, can public who elected him slap in public? What a shame. Dear Politicians you are under the nasha of power that you abused. You have no right whatsoevr to physically hurt any public servant or any common man. The Indisn Constitution has legalized consuming alchohol so what is your concern. If he has not done his job all you can do take appropriate action. This is stone age dictatorship. The settle the account, the bank manager should slap MP in public.

I agree with MP Jagannath. He has done correct for the manager who has not released the loan amount to SC/ST beneficiaries for the last six months at Uppununtala in the district. Also, the manager was drunk. Media is simply favouring the manager. At least the MP has done the right thing which is a lesson to other managers who don’t work properly.

I have gone through the comments made by certain people which are highly irresponsible. Banks do not look at the Caste when they give Loans. They have to see whether loans given are repaid later on. IT should not be like the Loan Mela of Janardhan Poojary 20 or 25 years back and many people failed to repay it.

The Bank Manager has to go through certain procedures and formalities. There is also possibilities that SC/ST Loan Applicant happen to be supporters of the MP or belong to the creamy layer SC/ST. There was no need for the MP to come to Bank and he could have spoken on phone and cleared the doubts instead he wanted to show what he is capable of and what he is capable of doing.

The said MP is not fit to be leader and when caught on camera his true violent behaviour he takes a complete U Turn to what his action was. Every word of his was filled with Lies. It is time that the Every Ruling Party should straighten up their leaders as the Media is playing a wonderful role in disclosing their wrongdoings which the voters will show after 5 years. Time to Change and Change we can.

Comparing this ill mannered MP to any MPs is nothing but downgrading others status. His actions flashing on news channel time and again is nothing but shame to our country. His political party should suspend /expel him ASAP to restore people''s confidence in that party. The slap by MP from Congress Party of AP to the bank Manager should be condemned. But the MP''s work for the welfare of SC/ST should also be appreciated. Without smoke there is no fire and prevention is better than cure. This is bad mark both for Bank Manager and for MP as one is the cause for this fire and the MP has forgotten the civic behavior.

Congress must suspend this MP with immediate effect, as nobody has the right to take law into his own hand. Why police is not arresting him as there is enough evidence to arrest him. Whatever may be the cause, no MP has any right to slap even a beggar. If they find any wrongdoings in the part of bank manager there is a better way to solve it. This man has no right to remain a MP.
