Beltangady, Jul 2:
Eleven persons including four children were hospitalized after they consumed poisonous mushrooms sourced from the wild, in Aniyoor, near here, on Wednesday July 1.

Those hospitalized are Mohammed (63), Sameema (22), Yacquob (39), Safiya (31), Shameema (20), Noushad (12), Habib (2), Irfan (5), Tajunnisa (3), Nabisa (36) and Vijay Achary (34).

Achary is a carpenter who had come to work at the house of Mohammed.  The family cooked mushrooms obtained from the nearby forest as they do every year.

An hour or so after lunching on the mushrooms, they began vomiting one after the other. Neighbours rushed them to Neria Government Hospital where the medical officer and nurses attended to them at once and were given first aid.

“The condition of a toddler was critical but stabilized after the treatment, said medical officer Dr Adam.

The family of Mohammed was happy at the swift response by medical staff at the government hospital.

The doctors advised the family to be cautious while sourcing mushrooms in the wild as there are poisonous varieties found which grow abundantly in the woods especially during the monsoon season.

District health officer Dr Jagannath, taluk health officer Dr Ravindranath, and MLA Vasant Bangera visited the family.
