Moodbidri, Jul 2: The Udupi district unit of ‘Patrakartara Vedike’, Bangalore, organized a felicitation programme in honour of eighty-year-old Gamak Vidwan B Chandrayya, Kannada and Tulu litterateur, journalist, and editor of ‘Viveka Abhyudaya’, a Kannada monthly.
The event was held at his residence on Wednesday July 1 on the occasion of Press Club Day celebrations. It was organized in association with Shree College.
Alva’s Education Foundation chairman Dr M Mohan Alva felicitated Vidwan Chandrayya by draping a shawl and presenting him trays of flowers and fruits.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Alva said that he had performed nearly 1,000 times to the Halakki Narasanna recital composed by Vidwan Chandrayya in Kannada. He added that it was exemplary to honour the stalwarts of Tulunadu every year.
Former minister Amarnath Shetty said that the enthusiasm and jest for life in Vidwan Chandrayya even at his advanced age deserves to be commended.
Karkal and Hebri keonics-yuva.com director Mohammed Arshad, cartoonist and Kannada documentary director Prakash Kabettu, N Sarojini Chandrayya, and entrepreneur Manjula Udupi were the chief guests present on the occasion.
Vidwan Chandrayya, acknowledging the felicitations, said that he would cherish the honour bestowed on him by his well-wishers in the media fraternity.
The district unit of the Patrakartara Vedike annually felicitates veterans on the occasion. In 2008, Kannada Sahitya Parishat district president and journalist Ambatanaya Mudradi was felicitated.
Vidhwan Chandrayya was the chairman of the state-level Gamak Sammelan held at Sri Durgaparameshwari Temple, Kateel, in Mangalore in 2008. He has also bagged several awards for his Tulu and Kannada literary contributions besides Tulunadu folklore.
