BANGALORE, JUL 6: With hardly two days left for meeting the Karnataka High Court’s deadline to implement its order on the language policy, the B S Yeddyurappa regime has decided to appeal for more  time till the Supreme Court takes up its Special Leave Petition (SLP) challenging last year’s high court.

``The SLP is scheduled to come up for hearing in the apex court on July 21. We would appeal to the state high court to give time till the SLP is taken up for hearing,’’ Karnataka’s primary and secondary education minister Vishweshwara Hegde Kageri said.

The minister said his department decided to file an appeal in the high court seeking more time following his consultation with the state’s law and parliamentary minister Suresh Kumar and the law department.

A division bench of Karnataka high court had lambasted the BJP government in the state last week for not implementing its last year’s verdict striking down the government’s stand in favour of making Kannada mandatory in schools as the medium of instruction and leaving the decision the decision to the choice of the parents. The division bench had directed the state government to make its stand clear on the high court’s verdict on the medium of instruction by July 8 or face contempt for non-implementation.

``We respect judiciary. We will honour the court’s verdict,’’ Kageri said pointing out that the government would seek more time from the high court till the supreme court took up its SLP for hearing.

Meanwhile, Karnataka’s newly appointed Advocate General Ashok Harnahalli made a special mention before the Supreme Court about the High Court order and prayed for early hearing of the case, which had been originally listed for August 10.
