Yeddy's Gift: Buy and Drink Wine from Malls, Supermarkets

Yeddy's Gift: Buy and Drink Wine from Malls, Supermarkets
From Our Special Correspondent
Daijiworld Media Network

BANGALORE, JUL 6: Quick on the heels of its recent decision to permit the state owned Mysore Sales International Ltd (MSIL) to open 431 liquor shops to ensure that tipplers do not have to travel more than 5 kms from their residences in towns and rural areas  to buy liquor, the B S Yeddyurappa-led BJP regime has come out with a policy of granting permission for opening of `wine boutigues’ in supermarkets, malls and multiplexes.

Thus, even housewives can conveniently buy wine bottles along with their requirement of groceries and other essential commodities from supermarkets and malls. Even youngsters and teenagers frequenting malls and multiplexes will be able buy wine while gossipping with their friends or going to watch movies in multiplexes.

``The  idea is to popularise wine and also help the grape-growers,’’ said Karnataka’s additional chief secretary and devlopment commissioner Dr L Shanthakumari, disclosing that the government has amended the relevant rules to allow opening of wine boutiques in supermarkets, malls and multiplexes for a low license fee of Rs 5,000 per annum.

The minimum space required at supermarkets, malls and multiplexes should not be less than 15,000 sq ft to become entitled for a wine boutique licence.

``This is a departure and welcome change from the existing policy of granting permission for opening of taverns on payment of an annual license fee of Rs 1,000. Taverns allow people only to sit and drink. They can’t carry wine home. But, wine boutiques will allow people to carry wine hom,’’ she said.

Dr Shanthakumari said the Karnataka Wine Board would be organising a three-day Wine Mela and Seminar at Lalbagh in the city from July 10 with a view to popularising cultivation of wine grapes and production of wine.

``We want more people to visit the festival and know more about wines, which has now become a family drink,’’ she said pointing out that wine was considered a healthy drink as it had very low percentage of alcohol and was not addictive.

``We also want to educate farmers and industrialists about the prospects of wine grape cultivation and production of wine in Karnataka,’’ she said explaining that the area under wine grape cultivation had steadily increased from 600 acres to 1,800 acres after the state government’s initiative to promote wine production and marketing in the state through its exclusive wine policy unveiled two years ago.

The total grape wine production, which was only around 15 to 18 lakh litres per year, had now touched 20 to 25 lakh litres after the introduction of the wine policy. In addition, the total number of wineries in the state had increased by nine in the last few months to reach 11.

``Karnataka had only two wineries in Doddaballapur in the Nandi valley and Bijapur in the Krishna valley. Now, nine new wineries had been set up,’’ she said.

Farmers, who were growing different types of wine grapes, were receiving around Rs 36 to Rs 38 per kg. However, it is necessary for farmers to bear in mind that wine grapes are cultivated under supervision of experts, preferably in contract farming. Only 4 to 4.5 tonnes of wine grapes should be grown in each acre, she said.

The State Government has granted 141.2 acres of land at Thoravi village at Bijapur to the Wine Board for development of a Wine Park.

``We plan to start a Wine Institute, where classes will be held for the farmers in wine grape cultivation, besides rearing nurseries of different varieties of wine grapes for the benefit of farmers, ’’ she said.

Incidentally, the state Wine Board has decided to develop the Wine Park with a private partner in a joint venture. ``We have chosen I-DECK as the agency to identify a private partner to help us in establishing the Wine Park,’’ she added.

Drinking and dancing is our culture too. "AUR WOH KYAA HAI, BHANG CHHADDA KE NAACHNA?". If one dance after drinking wine, what''s wrong. If wine is openely sold, it will definitely help stop unhealthy illegal brewing. Be Joyfully Piyo (BJP). BJP in the right path.

When someone is trying to correct himself from his past mistakes, when someone is wants to change for good, when someone is introducing a healthy drink in the market why we should highlight all his wrong doings of the past. Wine is considered as a healthy drink all over the world therefore let us accept it in good sprit. However one should understand that there is alcohol in the drink, hence drink to enjoy it and don’t allow the wine to enjoy your weakness.

It looks very funny, when people criticize every move of our CM, congress has ruled the state for the majority of the years since the state was formed and it has ruined it, if they wanted they could have developed this state, they didn''t not, the state has given very powerful ministers, but all are slaves in front of the high command, and that is the reason why karnataka has not moved on, and this wine issue, nobody is giving it to you for free, nobody is giving along the ration card, they have made it more convient for people WHO WISH TO BUY, NO FORCE, atleast the train to Goa will not be full, as many use to buy them from there because of the taxes in our state, now it will be cheaper and accessible to all WHO NEED IT, so arguing for the sake of arguing, because we dont have anything to do, is useless, if you dont want dont buy, but this is not a big law and order problem, so far there were no wines in supermarket, so karnataka was not a crime free state, common guys there are various issues we can disscuss, every move by the CM, comes for bashing, that looks very silly.

Dear Ashokanna, the comments on the wine is good. When BJP is openly declaring that they wanted to stop the so called Western culture and promote only Indian Values to the citizen. Congress party never point out any culture only they are concerned about the welfare of the people. If it was introduced by Congress, definitely BJP supporters would have bombarded with the comments.

Wine is food. Healthy in moderate quantity. Sorry, it is nobody''s culture. It is universal. Congrats to Yeddy for making it free for all in malls. Now it depends on the person who drinks. If farmers are happy, wine manufacturers are happy, wine dealers happy and mall owners are happy, then janata will also be happy. I am surprised to see our honorable C.M. Yeddi has shed his R.S.S.(Hindu) ideology either to encourage the Grape Growers from our state or to milk more revenue through excise duty by selling expensive wine through Malls and Super Markets, off which are frequented by our youngsters and ladies. He has out rightly banned cheap arrack to appease poor ladies and temple priests to garner their vote and behind the screen forced our poor labor class men and women folks to drink cheap whisky. He has cried foul when youngsters are drinking Beer in the Pub, labeling it as Western Culture and shed crocodile tears declaring the death of Indian (Hindu) Culture. Now he is offering Wine to our Frolicking Youngsters, Working and Elite Women. Is it called a U Turn or Hypocrisy? Really I am confused. Three Cheers to Yeddi Sir.

The wine manufacturers can get more business, and more people are going to drink wine. In France, people drink more wine, so they have less heart attacks. But in karnatka, by the abundant supply of wine, more accidents and fights can be created, but some people will get rich out of that. Where is Ram Sene now? Is it Indian culture to have wine in the stores, like rice and wheat?

Why more critics of this move of the BJP''s Govt? the answer is simple, BJP claims to be a party with difference, which is committed to protect or Socio- Cultural Heritage and Moral VALUES. And for the same reason it is (through its outfits) out to stop everything that doesn''t fits in the old and ancient (Hindu) culture, like Cow Slaughter, Beef Selling/Eating, Pub Culture, Valentine Culture, Young Boys/Girls Enjoying in the Parks/hotels/beaches/hotels etc. It cannot bear the Friendship/Love of Hindu Girls with Boys from other Communities (especially Muslim?Christeans) It is against the Conversion of the Hindus to other religions at any cost.(If someone converts to Hinduism, it is welcome)It also encourages Vandalism in the name of Moral Policing. In this background, when BJP Govt. under the Leadership of Mr Yeddiyurappa (coming from the Hard Core RSS Battalion)takes such decisions, obviously that must be criticised from every quarter of the society. Ofcourse it is a BJP regime and not the Talibani Government!

Now, we can see lots of drunkards in the mall and disrupting the public especially women’s. Even, the so-called moral police’s have more responsibility to tackle the drunkard in the malls. Certainly, Wine is not Indian culture and it is western culture. Even if Congress led government would have implemented this policy, then we would have opposed it regardless of the political affiliations.

Good for the farmer''s. No need of opening wineries Most of the people know to make wine at home these day''s, So let all make it at home and drink why waste money on mall''s etc. Intention is to help the farmer''s right, what difference does it make how we help them. Now the children also can learn to taste the wine from a early age and gain a lot of experience by the time they are adult''s and habitual drinker''s.
