Mangalore: Slight reprieve from Rain Fury: Water Levels ease

Mangalore, Jul 8: Artificial floods created problems for both residents and shopkeepers on Tuesday July 7 at places like Kottara Chowki, Malemar, Meenakaliya, Subhas Nagar and several other places in and around the city, as the water entered homes and shops.  MLA Yogish Bhat, district in-charge minister Krishna J Palemar, city mayor Shankar Bhat along with officials visited low-lying areas and supervised relief operations. The problem was acute between Kuntikan and Baikampady on national highway 17, where highway widening work is in progress and proper drainage system is not in place. A house in Padil here was damaged due to the landslide of a hillock on its backside. A cow was electrocuted after the power lines snapped at Tenkulipady village.

Udupi: The floods experienced by Udupi and Kundapur taluks in Udupi district have receded a bit due to the lessened rainfall. Director general of police, home guards, Jija Madhavan Harisingh visited Udupi and Mangalore to assess the situation. She held discussions with the officials during her visit to Udupi, Kalsanka, Malpe, Kodavoor etc., and sought details of the facilities they might require to combat the situation. Udupi district in-charge deputy commissioner N S Prasannakumar, superintendent of police Pravin Madhkar Pawar etc., accompanied her.  In addition to the 15 life jackets sanctioned as of now, she sanctioned 25 additional life jackets and a boat to enable the district administration to manage the situation. In the meeting held at Mangalore, in-charge deputy commissioner Prabhakar Sharma, inspector general of police Gopal Hosur, superintendent of police Subrahmanyeshwar Rao, fire brigade officials etc., were present.

Netravati and Gurpur rivers continue to be in full flow. The level of Netravati river water is 5.4 metres as against the danger level of 8.4 metres. Due to the overflowing Gurpur river, various low-lying areas have been inundated and the district administration has asked the tahsildar to shift the affected people to higher altitudes.

In Kodagu district too, the rain intensity came down on Tuesday. Bhagamandala, which was the worst hit, recorded 14 cms of rainfall. Linganamakki and Kollur received 13 cms of rainfall with the city receiving 11 cms. The rainfall in Uttara Kannada and Udupi district was far lower, at around five to six cms. The meteorological department has predicted the rainfall to continue all over the west coast and hinterlands during the next two days.

Schools remain closed: The deputy director of the department of public instruction, Dakshina Kannada district, Chame Gowda has announced that all the primary and high schools in the district will remain closed on Wednesday too. In Udupi district also, schools will remain closed today. In Kodagu, the district administration has declared holiday on Wednesday and Thursday.
