Mangalore: Police Arrest Drunk Sales Tax Employee for Harassment

Mangalore, Jul 10:  An employee of the sales tax department was arrested by the police after he created a nuisance after consuming alcohol and tried to extort money from the driver of a tempo carrying goods, near A B Shetty Circle in the city on Friday July 10.

Narayana stopped the tempo driver and demanded that the latter pay Rs 5,000 despite him showing receipts of tax payment and having committed no offense. 

The driver noticed that Narayana was drunk and called out for passersby to help him out. The people who gathered there called the police and arrested Narayana.

Pandeswar police said that the arrested man did not have the authority to levy tax or to check the receipts. But he was doing it for the sake of money and he had been caught by the public twice earlier for the same offense.

A sales department official said that Narayana should have been on duty at Thokkottu checkpost and is a group ‘D’ staff.
