Bengaluru: With by-elections announced, CM holds meeting with disqualified MLAs

Daijiworld Media Network – Bengaluru (EP)

Bengaluru, Sep 21: Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa on Saturday, September 21 held meeting with disqualified MLAs soon after by-elections were announced in 15 districts on October 21.

It is said that the chief minister tried to pacify them in a meeting held in the guest house of Aranya Bhavan.

All the disqualified MLAs including JD(S) disqualified MLA H Vishwanath reportedly attended the meeting. Govind Karajola, Basavaraj Bommai and Laxman Savadi too were present.

Further action will be taken after discussions with legal experts. There is no question of giving up on dissatisfied MLAs this time. Higher sources have revealed that the chief minister asked them not to worry.

The by-elections are crucial for the survival of the newly formed B S Yediyurappa-led BJP government which needs to win at least six assembly seats to stay in power.

The by-elections for 15 seats was necessitated after 15 rebel MLAs of the ruling Congress and the JD-S government switched their loyalty to the saffron party.

The 14-month-old Congress-JD-S government led by H.D. Kumaraswamy collapsed after the 15 MLAs resigned as legislators in late July this year.

Significantly, the announcement of the schedule of the by-elections means that the disqualified MLAs will not be able to contest.

In a dramatic turn of events, former Karnataka Speaker K.R. Ramesh Kumar disqualified as many as 17 rebel MLAs till the end of the current Assembly term running from 2018 to 2023, a day before the trust vote in the Karnataka Assembly.

The constituencies going to the polls include -- Gokak, Athani, Ranebennur, Kagwad, Hirekerur, Yellapur, Yeshwanthpura, Vijayanagara, Shivajinagar, Hosakote, Hunsur, Krishnarajpet, Mahalakshmi Layout, KR Pura and Chikballapura.

However, the poll panel did not announce the schedule for the R.R. Nagar and Maski assembly constituency.

Following their disqualification, the rebel MLAs had approached the Supreme Court to quash their disqualification. However, Justice M.M. Shantanagoudar recused himself earlier this week citing he is from Karnataka and that his conscience does not permit him to hear the case.

After the counting for the 15 assembly constituencies, the strength of the Karnataka Assembly will be 222. The ruling BJP currently has the support of 106 MLAs, including independent MLA H. Nagesh.

It is just a matter of time. C hiw many rats will fall in cage. Opposition have sufficient time to bring in people with cleam images to forefront and make them fight for their constituencis. Do not count on the people who already tarnished the image of the party. Put a good speaker who can speak tit for tat to counter attack the lies of the other party.

This is the real face of the balatkari party. They made good use of the 17 rebels and now took the EC into confidence and announced by polls.
These 17 should eat the muck. They thought that BJP will give them cream posts. Now their entire political career is in shambles.

For BJP with DK Shivakumar lodged in Tihar Jail and former CM Siddarmaiah hounded by 20 years old case seems to be much easy task winning these seats.

The JD(S) and Congress which is upset by the dissident are not happy to children's of these disqualified leaders given tickets.

As far as BJP its survival depends on its winnability. The Election Commission has already made it clear that there won't be any ballots. It is clear that EVM will once again work for BJP like Lok Sabha election results.

If BJP respect the value of the democracy it will not encourage these disqualified leaders children's with tickets.

But for Kannadiga the BJP government which born with 'sins', this bye-elections are additional expenditure when the state needs money to redevelop flood-ravaged areas.

Taking 2014 as the base, the cost of holding one election works out to Rs10 crore for an assembly constituency.
At an estimated, Rs 60,000 Crore, Lok Sabha Elections Costliest Ever; BJP Spent 45% of it, Shows Study
There are at least 75 to 85 seats where individual candidates spent more than Rs 40 crore, which is over 50 times the expenditure limit (Rs 70 lakh) mandated by the EC per candidate in a constituency.

The 2019 Elections’, has termed the recent democratic exercise as the ‘most expensive election ever, anywhere’ with an estimated Rs 100 crore spent in each Lok Sabha constituency. Effectively, an approximate Rs 700 per vote was spent.

The BJP alone spent more than Rs 28,000 crores for 2019 elections. The party which spent Rs 1000 crores for 'operation Kamala' Rs.10 crores is a small value.

But for Karnataka, these 15 seats will cost Rs150 crores for Bye-polls. Imagine how many schools, clinics, houses can be built for those flood-affected people?

What about black money at the heart of Indian democracy?
