Mangaluru, Oct 15: "Due to the impact of modern digital media, there is a steady decline in the people who read literature," opined Dr Edward Nazareth, renowned Konkani writer. He delivered a talk at a symposium on 'Current status of Konkani' organized jointly by Sandesha Foundation and Konkani Writers' Association, Karnataka, here on October 13 at Sandesha in the city.

"It is not only in Konkani, but in all the languages throughout the world, that literature is read less now. Reading literature has many benefits. Reading, particularly literary fiction helps to develop empathy in the people who read it. They can see the world from another person's eyes. Literature improves the concentration of the mind and helps to avoid dementia. Has interest in Konkani literature declined?"

In the next session, Wilfred Lobo, editor of 'Amcho Sandhesh', Konkani periodical opined that the circulation of Konkani periodicals has improved over the years. He dealt with various current issues related to Konkani periodicals.

Dr Gerald Pinto, chaired the session and conducted the discussion.

Fr Francis Assisi D'Almeida, director of Sandesha inaugurated the symposium and expressed full support of Sandesha Foundation for literary activities. Dolphy Lobo welcomed the gathering and J F D'Souza proposed the vote of thanks.

Silent tributes were paid to Konkani Writers and activists Walter Lasrado, Harryboy, Emmy D'Mello, Cypry Sampige, Jerry Bajjody and Gopal Gowda who expired recently.
