Bijapur: Family Reunion With A Difference

Bijapur Aug 4: In our high-tech, low-touch world, the meaning of the word ‘family’ is attaining a very narrow meaning. Family reunions are getting rarer with the passing years to an extent that only time members seem to get together is for marriages. Thus there is a missing link whereby family feels less connected.

In this scenario, youth Makarand Purohit’s decision to organize a grand family get-together aimed at reuniting nearly 150 people spanning three generations of his family with support of his cousins is a heartening move. The reunion aptly named Milana will be held at the ancestral temple in Rajnal, a village near Bijapur on Saturday August 8.

Purohit says, “We have trouble recognizing other family members who have aged through the passage of time. They might be just behind us in line at the billing counter of a local super mart and we would not even recognize each other. No family is perfect and surely has skeletons in the closet, a relative that drives you crazy, hurt feelings, jealousy, backbiting and unresolved issues. Our ancestors always planned frequent family get-togethers to create an environment of love and unity. A family reunion provides everyone with an opportunity to have some good time together forgetting everything, he stresses.

The two day event will see Raghavendra Joshi, the eldest son of Bharata Ratna Pandit Bhimsen Joshi striking some divine classical notes. Bhajans till late night has also been organized with whole community coming together for various religious activities. “A collection of all the important photographs of the family will be unveiled and made available to everyone,” Purohit adds.
