Karwar, Aug 8: The school and colleges bandh, called by Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishat (ABVP) and National Students Union of India (NSUI) on Friday August 7 in the district, opposing the proposed setting up of a thermal power plant at Hanakona and condemning the atrocities of the policemen on the protestors, was successful.

The students, who took out a procession from Maladevi Maidain the city, moved through the main roads. They raised slogans against the government and the policemen who they said, were responsible for the atrocities on the protestors. The student organizations also submitted a memorandum to the Governor of the state, through the district deputy commissioner here.

The memorandum urges the government to immediately cancel the permission granted to the thermal power plant, as it will heavily pollute land, water and environment of the district and endanger the lives of all the living beings. The students also said that the policemen behaved cruelly with men, women and children, who took part in the anti-power plant rally on July 30. Besides beating them up, the protestors were forcibly driven to Bellary Jail by the policemen, who acted as the agents of the company executing the project, the students explained in the memorandum.

ABVP district convener Raghu Naik, taluk leader Vinayak Harikantra, Santosh Palankar, NSUI district president N Bangarappa and others led the protestors.
