Mangalore, Sep 5: Heavy rains continued to lash the twin-districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi on Friday too. Rivers Kumaradhara in Dakshina Kannada and Seeta and Swarna in Udupi district have been overflowing. Low- lying areas on the banks of these rivers have been inundated. While river Kumaradhara touched the edge of Kumaradhara bridge, posing the risk of inundating the bridge, areas like Aroor and Uppoor un Udupi district came under water.

The big pot holes dotting the entire stretch of the national highway 17 and 48 look like deep ponds now, and vehicles are struggling to wade their way through this mess, in the midst of rain. A tiled house belonging to Seetu Hengsu in Sudemugeru village of Beltangady taluk crashed to the ground. Beltangady town panchayat president Baby, revenue inspector Padmakumar and village accountant Podiya visited the spot.

Due to the rough sea, a boat involved with deep sea fishing inundated on the night of Wednesday September 2 off the Malpe coast, inflicting a loss of about Rs 20 lac on Ramesh G Tingalaya from Malpe, to whom it belongs. The boat had left Malpe shore on August 26 and was on its way back when the boat developed cracks because of the choppy sea near the Bahaddurgadh lighthouse in Malpe. All the six fishermen of the boat were rescued by the fishermen of another boat.

Kundapur received 13 cms of rainfall. Udupi got 12 cms, city got 11 cms, Karkala 10, Bantwal 9 and Puttur 7. The meteorological department has predicted the rains to continue for two more days but has indicated that the intensity of rains will come down after Saturday. Most of the boats have returned to their bases because of the rough sea, as they are apprehensive about the possibility of the cyclonic storm hiting the coast.
