Mangalore, Sep 8: Opposing the anti-Dalit ruling and demanding proper usage of 18 percent funds reserved for the community, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) staged a ‘dharna’ in front of the Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) office on Tuesday September 8.

Addressing the gathering, Sunil Kumar Bajal, secretary, city committee of (CPI(M)), said that MCC has the records indicating misuse of funds allotted for the Dalit community.

“The funds meant for the 18 percent reservation have been allotted for some other works including road repairs. But the development in Dalit colonies as well as facilities for Dalit families remains a dream”, he said.

“The ruling party in the MCC has not considered the demands for proper usage of reserved funds over several years by members of the community”, said Bajal adding that there are several families that do not even have a housing plot even though they have filed applications for this several times.

The protesters demanded immediate clearance of the Sintex distribution plan which was scheduled to have been implemented before August this year.

They demanded an increase in the amounts for house construction, repair work, toilet-bathroom construction, and scholarships for students.

Vasudeva J P, convener of the committee for implementation of 18 percent plan, as well as CPI(M) leaders B Madhava, and Vasantha Achari, were present.
