Head-scarf Controversy - Aysha Asmin Leaves SVS College, Joins Hira Women's College

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Sep 9: Aysha Asmin, the student who was in the eye of the storm relating to a controversy arising out of the college management’s instructions to her not to wear the head-scarf while attending the classes, has now allowed the college management to heave a sigh of relief.  The controversy had been blown out of proportions and the issue had attracted the attention of various forums including the State Human Rights Commission. Asmin, who was a student of SVS College in Bantwal, and had lost several weeks of attendance because of the controversy, had also not attended the class tests held recently.

Initially, the college management had argued that other students of the college had asked the principal to allow them to wear any attire of their choice, including those that give out their religious identity, if the girl was allowed to wear the head-scarf. Recently, the college management had clarified that the student is free to wear the head-scarf while attending the college, till the management adopts a dress code for its students, after a meeting of the college governing council was held under the presidentship of Mangalore University vice-chancellor, Prof Kaveriappa. The college had indicated, that once the dress code was adopted, the student will have to wear the veil of her churidar as scarf, and that head-scarves of colours other than the uniform, would not be allowed.

The student got admitted into Hira women's college in Tokkottu near here, on Tuesday, before the issue acquired other dimensions and got entangled in further controversies.

Dear readers, it was not a bitter rivalry or revenge. The girl if continured in the college would have made to live under cloud and the faculty members would have treated her as step daughter. The move is very sensible and both the girl and the college Management were saved from future controversies if any. I hope RSS will not send its goons to Hira college.
