Udupi: State Committed to Promote Tulu - Dr Acharya

Udupi, Sep 29: Home minister Dr V S Acharya on Monday September 28 said that the state administration is committed to promote Tulu.
 
Dr Acharya was speaking at the release function of Tulu book, ‘Kemthur Doddanna Shetrena Samagra Kavya’ here. He also inaugurated the Kemthur Doddanna Shetty Memorial Trust on the occasion.
 


Dr Acharya also said that the initiative taken by the state administration was responsible for establishing the department of Tulu and translation studies at Dravidian University, Kuppam in Andhra Pradesh. The administration is also keen on getting Tulu included in the eight schedule of Constitution, he added.
 
The late Kemthur Doddanna Shetty, in his lifetime had put in great efforts to popularize Tulu literature through theatre, which was at a time when the mass media had not made its significant presence. He will forever remain in the hearts of Tulu enthusiasts for his contributions and great love for mother tongue Tulu, he emphasized.
 
City-based Tulu Koota president Bhaskaranand Kumar said that Kemthur Doddanna Shetty was indeed the torch bearer of Tulu movement. He added that Kemthur Doddanna Shetty Award was presented for the best Tulu drama by Tulu Koota in order to encourage artistes to quality dramas every year.

Tulu playwright Catherine Rodrigues, Katapadi and others were present.

     Robert caldwell in his book on south indian languages maintains tulu is a highly developed language comparable to spanish,he also writes that inspite of having not many speakers as compared to tamil tulu's vocablury and speech can be compared to tamil.Tulu has not been taught in tulu nadu that is why people don't know about it's strenght ..Tulu has been celebrated by western scholars not just people from udupi and managalore who have recently started appreciating it's beauty.

    I am a son of tulunad and I have great respect for the language but no one can deny that tulu is a very very local and primitive language without a script. It can be promoted as a hobby or an entertainment media. It can never be compared to the mainstream languages like Kannada or Tamil. Tulu can never help you anywhere outside of Mangalore or Udupi. Even the scope Kannada is limited to the state. In comparison Tamil and Malayalam are universal languages. So lets stop dreaming about glorifying tulu in the best interest of all.
