Brahmavar, Jan 27: A coolie who fell into a stone quarry at Horvarabettu,Yadthady near Saibrakattehere fell into a stone quarry and went missing on Saturday January 25. The deceased has been identified as Shankar Naik (45) from Mathadabettu.

Shankar used to work on daily wage basis in Saibrakatte and surrounding areas since the last many years. As he was a liquor addict, the family had disowned him, it is learnt.

The locals noticed that Shankar had fallen into the quarry late evening on Saturday. Although local divers made efforts to trace and rescue him, they could not do so. Even the fire brigade personnel failed to do anything. The search continued all through Sunday but the result was the same. It is not yet certain whether he wanted to end his life or accidentally fell into the quarry.

Brahmavar police visited the spot and registered a case.

The concerned quarry was operated for a number of years by local entrepreneurs and it is 45 to 50 feet deep. Although it is mandatory for quarry operators to erect protective fencing around dangerous quarries with standing water, this quarry is open on three sides. There are several houses nearby. During the recent years, eight to ten people have fallen into quarries located in the region and died in this fashion.
