No Compulsion to Support BJP: RSS Chief

Patna, Oct 11 (IANS) Two days before state assembly elections are held in three states, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) declared Sunday that its cadres were under no compulsion to support the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Addressing RSS members in Bihar's Rajgir town, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat said they could endorse any political party on the basis of its policy and programmes "in the national interest", a Sangh leader told IANS.

Bhagwat was addressing the last day of a three-day national executive meeting.

"The cadres were told that there was no compulsion to support the BJP. He directed them to support any political party on the basis of policy and programme," the RSS source said over telephone.

The RSS, considered the idealogical mentor of the BJP, has over the past two days praised Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi over his visits to rural homes and Home Minister P. Chidambaram for announcing a "tit for tat" policy against Maoists.

Mohan Bhagwat's comments come ahead of Tuesday's assembly elections in Maharashtra, Haryana and Arunachal Pradesh. The BJP is the chief opponent to the Congress in Maharashtra and Haryana.

The RSS meeting was attended by 350 members from all over the country. Rajgir is located near Nalanda, about 100 km from here and an ancient seat of learning.

The RSS source said that members discussed terrorism, Maoist violence, border disputes with Pakistan and China, rural development, drought and a "Gau Gram Yatra" or campaign to save cows.

The crisis in the BJP, whose senior leaders have in recent times attacked one another, also came up for discussion.

The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), which has got a new chief in Mohan Bhagwat, has travelled a long way since it was born in a middle class house in Nagpur in 1925 to mould the Hindu way of thinking and influence the national struggle for independence.

The organization has remained controversial all these decades. From 1947 to 2009, successive governments banned it thrice. Its critics term the RSS ideology of "Hindutva" communal, conservative and revivalist. Here are some interesting facts about RSS, which believes in staying away from the media glare: * RSS was founded by a former Congress worker, Kesava Rao Baliram Hedgewar (known commonly as Doctorji in RSS circles), on Sep 27, 1925 at his residence in Nagpur, where it is now headquartered. The objectives for setting up the RSS were to unite Hindus and to uplift them, leading to the birth of a Hindu rashtra (nation). * The name RSS was ed officially April 17, 1926. That year the RSS started its daily meetings called "nitya shakha" where volunteers, known as "swayamsevaks", met every day. * The "shakha" continues to be the basic unit of the RSS organizational structure, which along with its allied organizations is widely referred to as the Sangh Parivar. "Shakha" is from where RSS gets its volunteers. * RSS calls these volunteers "swayamsevaks". Anyone is free to come and join RSS meetings, which are generally held in neighborhood parks. There is no official membership. Anyone who has come to a shakha even once is treated as a 'swayamsevak' * According to RSS estimates, till the end of January 2009 there were 43,905 shakhas running in 30,015 places weekly shakhas were being held in 4,964 places and monthly meetings took place in 4,507 locations all over India. There is no official count of its "swayamsevaks". * The first RSS chief was K.B. Hedgewar (1925-40). M.S. Golwalkar, also known as "Guruji (1940-73), was the second RSS chief followed by Balasaheb Deoras (1973-94), Rajendra Singh or "Rajju bhaiyya" (1994-2000) and K.S. Sudarshan (2000-09). Mohan Bhagwat is the sixth RSS chief. * Within RSS circles, its chief is known as the "sarsanghchalak". The term was coined in 1929. RSS chief is nominated by his predecessor. The general secretary is "sarkaryavah". He is elected by an utive council for three years. These two are the most powerful positions in the RSS. * RSS is exclusively for males. But it has a women's wing, Rashtriya Sevika Samiti. * When it was born, RSS was dominated by Maharashtrian Brahmins. Over the decades, it began to accept people from all segments of Hindu society. * Till 1936, RSS was active only in Maharashtra. In the next decade or so, it established its presence in northern India through volunteers who decided to work full time for expanding the organization.

It now has a pan India presence. * In 1948, RSS was banned in independent India for the first time following Mahatma Gandhi's assassination.

Hi, Mr. Jerome, I appreciate your view point about RSS, I personally dont hold anything negative about the organisation. I have been to their meeting once accidently as my friend forced me. They are pro country I as a Indian, I am happy but they dont speak as what they act, their view point on other religion is bad by doing this they are dividing the nation on the basis of religion, like any other political party. What I WANT TO CONVEY IS TRY TO KNOW THEM NOT ONLY THROUGH MEDIA COVERAGE - DONT JUST GO BY THE MEDIA COVERAGE. They may not be Bad but they arnt good either. Let their words turn into action ??

There are a terrible lot of lies going about the world, and the worst of it is that half of them are true. . . There is sunrise and sunset and everything in between is peanut butter. A politician needs the ability to foretell what is going to happen tomorrow, next week, next month, and next year. And to have the ability afterwards to explain why it didn't happen. Its hard to justify Mr Mohan Bhagawat comments as any thing and every possible in friction of time, lets hope for the best

I fully agree with what Mr.Bhagwat has to say, we should vote for progress and support a party based on its policies and programs, which has national Intrest as main objective. BJP is not a party today what is used to be before and has become like any other party, corrupt and divisive, what say Nagesh maam!

Revolutionary change. Its welcome. I think RSS think tank is undergoing reformation. I also endorse his views. As long as the ideology is in the national interest and unification of India, I dont mind supporting BJP or RSS. For me national interest is greater than party ideology.

I support good leaders who are pro active irrespective of their affiliation. Dear Mohan Bhagawat, you are a sensible leader and with this note of yours, I hope there would be remarkable changes in RSS ideology and BJPs vote bank policy. Good luck sir.
