Udupi, Feb 6: Udupi district Rajiv Gandhi Panchayat Raj Sanghatana organised a public sensitization programme on CAA, NRC and NPR at Town Hall, Ajjarkadu, here on Thursday, February 6.

Speaking on the occasion, Congress leader Ugrappa termed Prime Minister Narendra Modi and home minister Amit Shah as ‘modern day Bhasmasuras’.

“Wherever they lay their sight, they cause harm. Their vision is cursed. Modi had promised that he will credit money in every person’s account. But no promises are kept. The union government should have focused on providing basic infrastructure and development. Even here, it has failed. India needs to be Modi and Amit Shah free,” he stressed.

“A democratic country like India does not differentiate people on basis of caste or religion. Let us come out from the mind set imposed by our leaders, who are getting ready to judge citizenship on basis culture and religion. Indian Constitution has given rights to all to lead respectful life. The constitution considers all equal. But BJP government is trying to take over all rights from us by spreading wrong information regarding CAA, NPR and NRC,” he added.

Meenakshi Natrajan, state president, RGPRS, a politician and activist said, “I believe that the whole earth is one family. There are lots of species in the nature. Without human beings there is no meaning to a nation. India is a diverse country in terms caste, religion, food, culture, language, festivals and many other things. Indian Constitution was drafted on the basis of socialism, secularism.”

“People representatives are not rulers but they are the representatives of people. NPR will come into effect in April and all will be made to stand in queue. It is like harassment to all poor people. When the Central government implemented demonetisation policy, poor were standing in queue for days but not black money holders,” she added.

“I am very sure that there is conspiracy behind these laws. The BJP led Central government is following divide and rule. Today, one particular class people are standing in society to fight against CAA, NRC and NPR and this is appreciable. Let’s fight without violence and that is what Gandhiji followed throughout his life. People should decide that, they won’t give their birth documents and I too will not present any records during NPR survey, because I am the citizen of this India and I need not prove it,” she said.

Social activist Shivasundar said, “This issue should be tackled carefully, thoughtfully and not in a hurry. Large numbers of people living in India are migrants and all have lived together without any discrimination. India respects other country people too. There is relation between republic and civilization. One who is born in a country, he belongs to same country. Our country did not ask religion while giving citizenship. But today’s government is mixing religion with citizenship.”

He further said, “NPR is mother and NRC is its son. Let us focus on cancelling NPR within parliament and outside also.”

B M Sandeep, state convener delivered keynote address.

Rangaswamy, state convener RGPRS, K T Benni, Viajay Singh, state co-convener RGPRS, Vinay Kumar Sorake, former MLA Kaup, Ashok Kumar Kodavoor, District Congress Committee, Prakhyat Shetty, vice president, DCC, Kishan Hegde Kolkebail, general secretary, Veronica Cornelio, Sunitha Shetty and Roshini Olivera, district RGPRS coordinator Udupi, Sunadar Master, William Martis and others were present.
