India's internal matter: Trump on CAA

New Delhi, Feb 25 (IANS): US President Donald Trump said that the Citizenship Amendment Act did not figure in his talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Responding to a query during the media briefing on Tuesday, the last day of his two-day state visit to India, Trump said that the CAA is an internal matter of India.

"We did talk about religious freedom. Prime Minister Modi believes in religious freedom," said Trump. About the violence over the Citizenship Amendment Act in Delhi, Trump said, "I heard about it, but we did not discuss it." He added that the CAA is India's internal matter.

Several parts of northeast Delhi have been wracked by violence over the past three days, coinciding with Trump's visit to India.

Supporters and opponents of the contentious law have clashed since Saturday night. Nine people have died so far in the violence.

United States Commission has released its International Religious Freedom 2019 report.

US Commission on International Religious Freedom is a bipartisan, independent federal government commission, created by International Religious Freedom Act of 1998.

This year, USCIRF has recommended 16 countries for CPC designation and five entities for EPC designation.

The 12 countries on USCIRF’s Tier 2 list are Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Cuba, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Iraq, Kazakhstan, Laos, Malaysia, and Turkey.

    India- specific Key findings:

1.India saw an “overall deterioration of religious freedom conditions in 2018”.
    2. India continues to remain a Tier II country. It is in same list since 2009. Tier II countries are those in which violations engaged in or tolerated by government are serious and characterized by at least one of the elements of systematic, ongoing, and egregious (horrible)’.
    3. India is facing declining religious freedom, apart from increased securitisation and politicisation of religion.
    4. It is increasingly becoming difficult to separate religion and politics. It is a tactic which is sometimes intended by those who seek to discriminate against certain religious communities.
    5. Over the last decade Minorities conditions have deteriorated in country. The reason is attributed to extremist groups, anti-conversion laws, cow-protection groups, mob lynching, concerns that millions from Assam will be incorrectly left out of NRC (National Register of Citizen) and a denying international NGOs registration.
While President says CAA is India's internal matter the government report on India list is in Tier II.

Their intention is very clear. That is ,If there is a civil war or a war between India & Pak only then , The US can benefit by getting more defense deals. The Proxy war in middle east supported by US is great example for it.

CAA is not India's internal matter but the ruling BJP govt's internal matter. If it was India's internal matter then there wouldn't have been any protests from people of India and opposition leaders. But to put economic sanctions, defence and security agreements is your internal matter.

You got the job done that you came to India for - why would you care ?

Had there been pressure from Modi about increasing the number of H-1B visa, Trump would have asked to settle CAA dispute before.
