Mangalore, Nov 15: World Diabetes Day celebrated on November 14 marks the birthday of Frederick Banting, who, along with Charles Best, is credited with the discovery of insulin.

Committed to the theme of World Diabetes Day from 2009 – 2013: Diabetes Education and Prevention, the Department of Medicine, Father Muller Medical College organized a free diabetes screening camp on Saturday November 14, which was inaugurated by Fr Patrick Rodrigues, director, Fr Muller Charitable Institutions.

Fr Rodrigues in his presidential address stressed the importance of having clear knowledge about diabetes. He said the statistics of diabetics in India is increasing. So people should be well informed to take precautions to live a healthy life.
 
Dr Narasimha Hegde, head, department of medicine explained the symptoms and causes of diabetes as well as precautions to be taken if diabetics. He also briefed about the importance and facilities of this camp. He mentioned the department’s future plan of establishing a separate diabetic clinic in the hospital. 

Fr Stany Tauro, administrator, Fr Muller Medical College Hospital in his address said, people having diabetes can also lead a happy life. He also gave an advice that people having diabetes should consult the doctor and have a control over the diet. Peace of mind too plays a great role. 
  
Fr Denis D’Sa, administrator, Fr Muller Medical College, Dr B Sanjeev Rai, chief of medical services, Dr Jayaprakash Alva, dean and Dr L L Joshua, medical superintendent were present for the programme.

The camp was held up to 1.00 pm in the medicine outpatient department. Patients were given free physical examination, blood sugar estimation and education on diabetes and its complications. In all 120 patients registered under the camp and availed the benefits.
