In pics: 'Janata Curfew' gets huge response in Karnataka, CM thanks people

Bengaluru, Mar 22 (IANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modis call for self-imposed curfew from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Sunday to contain Coronavirus spread evoked a massive response, turning Karnataka into an eerie state, as lakhs of people stayed at home, an official said.

"The day began on a positive note with lakhs of people across the southern state staying home in response to Modi's call for a 14-hour janata curfew from morning to night to minimise Coronavirus impact," a state health official told IANS here.

With a partial lockdown already in force since a week till March 31 to avoid crowding at public places and social contacts, citizens remained indoors on a day which is a general holiday for offices, companies, factories, banks, schools and colleges.

"As several flights and trains were cancelled, buses, taxis and auto-rickshaws remained off roads and malls, cinema theatres, markets, shops, eateries, restaurants, clubs and bars shut, the people have not ventured out even in their personal vehicles or on foot," a relieved official asserted.

A few hundreds of passengers who alighted at the main bus stand and the nearby railway station in the city centre after overnight travel from other cities and towns across the state and country, had a harrowing time going home in the absence of public transport, including city buses, taxis and autos.

In a nationwide televised address on March 19, Modi urged the people across the country to stay home on Sunday to prevent them from contracting the communicable disease.

"We are overwhelmed by the people's response to Modi's call to limit the dangerous fallout of COVID-19 by not venturing out of homes and ensuring safe health. Their cooperation will help the government minimize the risk of contracting the infection or exposing to it," the official added.

With five new cases on Saturday, the number of COVID-19 patients rose to 20 across the state, an official told IANS.

In a fervent appeal, state Chief Minister B.S. Yediurappa urged the people to stay home throughout the day to check the fatal virus.

To set an example, Yediyurappa stayed at his personal home in the city's northern suburb and monitored the situation.

Karnataka cheers corona warriors with claps, bells

Thousands of people across Karnataka on Sunday cheered the medical fraternity for containing Coronavirus by clapping, ringing bells and blowing conch shells for 5 minutes at 5 pm, as urged by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

"Thousands of people, including men, women and children from all walks of life came out of homes in cities and towns across the southern state, clapped, cheered and lauded doctors, nurses and paramedics for treating the Covid-19 affected patients in the country," an official told IANS here.

Leading the applause to Corona warriors, Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa and his family members clapped loudly 5 minutes non-stop outside his personal residence in the city's northern suburb.

"Yediyurappa thanked the people for their collective response to Modi's call for expressing gratitude to the medical fraternity in containing the communicable disease risking their health and welfare. He also lauded the people for staying at home through the day as urged by Modi to observe janata curfew," the official said.

Sounds of clapping, bells ringing, striking plates and blowing conch by the denizens reverberated across this tech city for over 5 minutes as many continued to do longer to break the monotony of staying home for 14 hours from 7am to 9pm.

Police personnel on duty across cities and towns in the state also joined the public in appreciating the medical community in containing the infection from spreading rapidly so far.

Hundreds of people living in high rise apartments across the city also stepped out of their flats and stood in balconies, clapped and cheered the unnamed doctors, nurses and the health staff for their yeomen service to the Covid-hit.

Its not celebration time. As per my observation Government intention was to educate people and to maintain social distance etc.

Sadly our Governor himself violated and there is no seriousness. Our Governor should be suspended immediately by central government so it will be example for others.

Purpose of taali and thaali was supposed to show respect to the health care and peacekeeping staff. But, by these celebration-like mass gatherings are going to be the burden on these same health care and peacekeeping staff.

Looking at the photos with drums and all...only one thing was missing... that was dancing... Some dressed well and all. What people thought god only knows... If you make sound in groups either hitting the plate and other instruments corona will run away? Janta curfew is social distancing. Staying away from public or groups. So what's the use of sitting inside the house whole day and then gather outside? Later in the evenings roam out with the family? Very very pathetic!!

Motto behind Janata Curfew/Lock down was to maintain social distancing, which is seem to be violated end of the day.We were advised not to visit public places and avoid gatherings to ensure our safety and well being. It is our responsibility to comply to the instructions and guidelines issued by the Govt. and act accordingly with high understanding of consequences.

Immediately start a Govt Medical college and research centre in Mangalore along with advanced medical Lab. Vast area used for revenue offices in State Bank old DC office, Wenlock hospital, University College, Mini Vidhaana Soudha areas, Police quarters area, govt officials residential area in Kottara etc can be utilised for the purpose since revenue offices are shifting to Padil.
