Udupi: BJP to Field Single MLC Candidate from Udupi, Dakshina Kannada

Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi (SP)

Udupi, Nov 28: Home minister, Dr V S Acharya, has said that the BJP will field only one candidate, Kota Srinivas Poojary, from Udupi and Dakshina Kannada constituencies. Although the party is yet to officially announce Poojary’s candidature, his name has been recommended from these districts, he revealed.

The party’s decision to field only one candidate stems from the fact that the party has enough votes in the local bodies, to ensure the success of one candidate. Although it has about a thousand more votes than required for the victory of its candidate, these excess votes are not enough for the victory of a second candidate. Hence, the party has decided to play safe and field only one candidate.

It may be recalled that the BJP had fielded Kota Srinivas Poojary in the year 2008, during the election held to fill the vacancy caused in the legislative council, by the death of the Congress MLC, Blasius M D’Souza. Poojary, who got elected, could function as a member of the legislative council for only 18 months, which happened to be the unexpired term of the late D’Souza. In view of this, he is being given a chance again to work for a full term, the party sources said.
