Bantwal, Dec 11:
A few classrooms at the Sri Rama Vidya Kendra, Kalladka, were gutted in a fire on the morning of Thursday December 10.

The Vidya Kendra follows the ‘gurukul’ system of education and has been functioning from traditionally-built classrooms made of hay and other similar elements.

The fire was first sighted in one classroom at about 10.30 am on Thursday and soon spread to other classrooms.

A major tragedy was averted as the students were out on the playground during the time the fire extended to other classrooms. Vaidyanath Mandir, located near the classrooms, was also damaged in the fire.

The benches, students’ bags and books, were all gutted in the fire.  The students of the neighbouring college and the general public managed to extinguish the fire by pouring water.  The fire brigade from Puttur also arrived on the spot.

Tahsildar P N Manjunath and town police inspector arrived at the site to review the damage.
