'Congress with Indians whether in power or not': Sonia Gandhi amid lockdown

Daijiworld Media Network - New Delhi (SS)

New Delhi, Apr 14: Chief of the Congress party, Sonia Gandhi addressed the people of India through a video message, just a few hours before the Prime Minister’s address to the nation. In her message, Gandhi praised those at the forefront in the battle against COVID-19, such as doctors, policemen and sanitation workers, who are fighting the pandemic in spite of the scarcity in resources. She further expressed that Congress stands with the people during this difficult time, whether the party was in power or not. She even appreciated the patriotism brought on from the unity displayed by the whole country in fighting the pandemic.

In her message, Gandhi even urged the citizens to follow the lockdown and adhere to the norms of social distancing. Congress supremo also advised people to support the policemen and jawans who are on duty to ensure a safe and successful lockdown; sanitation workers who are trying to restrict the spread of the virus, and the government officials who are working to ensure the smooth supply of essential products and services.

Gandhi condemned the harassment of doctors and said that it was against Indian culture to do so. At the end of the video, she thanked all those who donated supplies for those requiring them and those who are helping in fighting the pandemic at an individual level. Gandhi further said, "All Congress workers are with the citizens of India, whether in power or not."

Prime Minister Modi addressed the country on Tuesday, soon after India crossed the 10,000 mark in COVID-19 cases and announced the extension of nationwide lockdown till May 3.

On April 10, Gandhi stressed that the lockdown was going to put a lot of burden on the Indian economy and emphasized the need to be ready for it. A day ago, she wrote to PM Modi, asking him to ensure that no one faces hunger due to the countrywide curbs.

Currently, India has reported over 10,000 coronavirus cases, with over 300 deaths.
