Abu Dhabi, May 16: UAE has taken several drastic measures in order to prevent large gatherings, and in turn, contain the virus. This includes closing of schools, offices and places of worship and banning public events and private get-togethers.

Health authorities advised the people to follow the precautionary measures and not to take part in large gatherings. A number of violations were recorded, the most recent one of 30 people from two families gathering and spreading the disease among themselves.

Dr Hend Al Awadhi, public health specialist at the Dubai Health Authority, in a recent press briefing, urged the residents to follow the norms even during Ramadan. He added that the country is still far from being back to normal. Even though the restrictions have been eased, the pandemic is not over. There can be people who are not aware that they have the virus and pass it on to others, he added.

Dr Zakir K Mohamed, consultant surgeon, Mediclinic Parkview Hospital, who has been one of the doctors treating COVID-19 patients said that it is disheartening to see someone being affected by the virus due to a careless family meeting or congregational prayer that goes against official advice. He added that it does not befit the Ramadan spirit.

He also added that a majority of the population is asymptomatic to the infection. "Elderly people are more vulnerable to the virus. He appealed to the people to sacrifice the tranquility of group prayers and Iftar family get-togethers and meetings with the elderly, in order to protect everyone from the disease. One can spend time worshiping the one creator and praying for those fighting for their lives in the hospitals."
