Bangalore: Governor Favours Cow Slaughter Ban Legislation

Daijiworld Media Network – Bangalore (SP)

Bangalore, Jan 18: State Governor, H R Bharadhwaj, advised the saints and the Sanyasis to exert pressure on the government for enacting anti cow slaughter legislation. He was speaking after inaugurating the World Peace Conference organized by Oswal Parishad in the city on Sunday January 17.

Lamenting that a blanket ban on the slaughter of cows has not yet been enforced in the country, he suspected this to be the fall out of the political equations of projecting enforcement of a ban on cow slaughter as a religious issue. As far as conserving of the cow breeds, politics should not have any say, he opined.

“Shunning of all kinds of violence has been the crux of every religion. No one should talk lightly of other religions. We should develop high regard for every other religion. None of the religions in the world glorify violence. Still, Jainism is the only religions that has, since its inception, been vociferously upholding non-violence,” he felt.

The issue here is not cow-slaughter. Can we eat beef or not? If beef can be eaten in India, it means cows can be slaughtered elsewhere but not in India. One religion can advocate on banning cow-slaughter, a second religion can ban eating pork, a third religion can ban fish and so on. At the end we can be violent as animals arguing about sacredness or ugliness of animals, a create a society divided over diets and purification. First we need to allow God has to purify our minds and hearts and to recognize the sacred in all human beings.

Only then can we really speak about cats, cows, dogs and pigs. Peace, patience and non-violence is what we need which will defend the dignity and sacredness of every human person. Otherwise, we will have religions using books to justify harming or killing humans. Civilization is not just about defending plants and animals, but recognizing human beings as persons, irrespective of religion, caste, race or nationality.

There are many legislations in this country, why not have one more, whereby those people who breed cows can consume all their produce, & are free to sell them as well(Kamadhenu). I think,it is better to protect indigenous cow variety by the legislation, exempting foreign breeds.

If cow slaughter is permited, breeding will boost and there wont be shortage of beef or cows. If banned, there will not be breeding and their number will decrease and we may have to look at our neighbouring countires/states for milk and diary products.
