Karnataka police oppose bail plea of anti-CAA activist Amulya

Bengaluru, May 21 (IANS): Claiming that the controversial student activist Amulya Leona was influential and might threaten witnesses if set free, the Karnataka police opposed her bail application for release from the judicial custody, an official said here on Thursday.

"As the petitioner (Amulya) is an influential person, she may threaten witnesses in the sedition case filed against her, if released from jail," the official told IANS, citing the statement of objections the prosecution had filed in the Karnataka High Court on Tuesday.

The 19-year-old activist was arrested on February 20 for shouting "Pakistan Zindabad" slogan at an anti-CAA rally, organised by the Hindu-Muslim-Sikh-Issai Federation, where AIMIM president Asauddin Owaisi was also present.

Later, the police filed a sedition case against Amulya for indulging in anti-national activities and instigating friends to stage protest rallies and demos against the BJP government in the state and the Centre.

Submitting Amulya's antecedents as an evidence of her involvement in anti-national activities, the prosecutor told the court as a habitual offender, the accused was prone to indulge in provocative speeches, causing disharmony in society and disturb the peace.

"For drawing undue attention and gain publicity, she may again raise pro-Pakistan and anti-India slogans at public events and provoke the gathering," reiterated the official.

The investigation into the conduct of the Federation, which organised the meeting at the Freedom Park in the city centre on February 20, is yet to complete. If set free, she might influence it and not cooperate with the police, he said.

Amulya had moved the bail application in the high court in March after a lower court remanded her to the judicial custody.

The next hearing has been set for May 28.
