Kundapur, May 23: A group of 72 workers in the leadership of former taluk panchayat leader Bharath Kumar Shetty and former panchayat representative Vijaya Kumar have begun cleaning of more than three kilometres long drainage gutter which resembles a canal from Tambladi house to Neeroni house here. The work is being taken up to enable drainage water flow freely after 25 years.

The canal was covered by plants, trees and shrubs. The water from it used to enter agricultural land during the monsoons causing destruction. The cleaning will help in cultivation. Broken rocks on the way are being joined.

Stone masonry work was conducted for the canal during the term of former district panchayat president B N Shankar Poojary. “The cleaning will help free flow of drainage water,” said Bharath Kumar Shetty.

“The work is being conducted through panchayat with help from locals,” said Vijaya Kumar, panchayat representative.

This kind of work is commendable and should be started across the state so as to provide employment to a maximum number of migrant labourers.
