Chamarajanagar, Jun 18: A woman who stole a newborn on Wednesday, June 17 from the district hospital in the city was nabbed by the police within three hours. With the recovery of the child, the family members heaved a sigh of relief.

The arrested accused has been identified as Ranjitha (24), who resides near Marigudi street in Hunsur.

Muttamma (22) from Palya village in Kollegal taluk had given birth to a male child on June 13 at the district hospital. As the child's health was not steady, the grandmother of the child had come to the hospital. Ranjitha befriended the child's grandmother and took the child in her hands. She then asked the old lady to check whether the doctor had arrived. When the lady's attention was diverted, she fled from the hospital.

The old lady then informed the doctor. This information was given to police inspector, Nage Gowda, who began an investigation. Based on the information provided by the auto-rickshaw drivers regarding a lady with a newborn in hand had boarded a bus for Hunsur, the police officials then contacted the Hunsur police and asked them to check buses coming there from Chamarajangar. They also forwarded the photograph of the child to them by WhatsApp.

As soon as the bus reached Hunsur, the police took Ranjitha into custody. She reportedly told the police that she stole the child as she does not have a child of her own. The police action in getting back the child in such a short time has come in for lavish appreciation.
