Bengaluru: PAC warns officials about inhuman treatment of corona patients

Bengaluru, Aug 12: Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of the state legislature which met here on Tuesday, August 11, discussed about the inhuman treatment of coronavirus patients, the sluggish pace of work by officials at the COVID care centres, and their non-inclination to use modern technology, and issued a stern warning to the officials.

The PAC discussed the issues like infected persons being treated by tying their legs together, and other things. The meeting specifically touched upon the functioning of Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Covid Care Centres The meeting was presided by H K Patil. The meeting expressed displeasure at the functioning of the centres and asked the officers to make use of modern technology. BBMP commissioner, Manjunath Prasad, and senior IAS officer, Rajendra Kataria, were summoned to the meeting.

Speaking To media persons, H K Patil noted that even entities like Ola and Uber are using app-based services but in the Covid care centres, no such technology is used. He said that the patient should be able to contact his relatives through CCTV and that the officials can manage this service by sitting in their chambers. He said that auditing of the deaths helps the concerned to understand the number of people who actually died out of coronavirus infection. He accused the officials of losing the interest which they showed initially when setting up these centres on the basis of rent.

Former assembly speaker Ramesh Kumar, MLAs Sathish Reddy, Y A Naratabaswamy etc objected to the tying of ICU patients to stop them from moving around. The meeting directed BBMP commissioner Manjunath Prasad, to file a report on these allegations.
