Puttur, Aug 31: In an incident which happened at Uppinangady in the taluk on Sunday, August 30, a mentally unsound man fell into River Netravati and was washed away. He was somehow rescued, but thereafter, he went into a rage and went on a rampage in front of Uppinangady police station.

The man in question has been identified as Sadananda Shetty, resident of Murugoli village in Beltangady taluk. On Sunday, he was found loitering near Lord Sahasralingeshwara temple. Even though the flood rescue team of the home guards warned him, he rejected their advice and went into the river. After he went farther into the river, the water pulled him away. The home guards team and expert divers immediately jumped into the river and rescued him.

Thereafter, the police brought him to the police station and entertained him by meeting his requirement. They also provided new clothes and food to him. At that time, his mental condition appeared to have deteriorated all of a sudden. He misbehaved with the police inside the station and began to throw stones at the station. He also threw away his shirt and began to vandalise the area. In the evening, he went to the bus stand area at Uppinangady and behaved violently at the auto-rickshaw parking area there. The locals, with the support of the police, succeeded in sending him home in an auto-rickshaw.

In-charge unit officer of home guards, S Dinesh B, and staff, Vasanth K, as well as divers Sudarshan, Ganiga, Chennappa, Vishwanath Shettigar and Ismail Haji helped in his rescue.
