Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, May 1: In connection with chasing and bludgeoning to death a petty thief named John Pinto (43), a resident of Mannagudda in the city, by a gang early morning on Thursday April 29, the policemen of Barke station have arrested eight persons. They have been accused of murdering Pinto. Reportedly, the men were agitated over petty thefts taking place in the area that had bothered some of them. The arrests were made on Friday.

The arrested have been identified as Barke Charan, Tokkottu Vicky alias Vikram, Rajesh, Avinash, Sushant, Mahendra, Deekshit and Shreyas. A police team led by sub-inspector Shivaprakash made these arrests.

It is said that the men had formed groups to find out the thief responsible for thefts of some of their belongings. After finding John Pinto lurking in darkness for theft, they reportedly chased him and hit him with wooden pieces and sticks, injuring him badly. He was then abandoned on a road in Mannagudda by the gang. After some people, who found Pinto lying by the roadside, informed the Barke police, he was moved to a hospital, where he died shortly thereafter. Before dying, he had given hints about his killers.

All the arrested men are aged between 22 and 24 years, and work as electricians, labourers, welding worker etc., it is learnt.

In trying to retaliate against apparent thefts (we are yet to corroborate this version), they have committed an even bigger crime! Killing someone for petty thefts is not done.

A minor observation: if they had been agitated about thefts, then caught hold of the robber and immediately beat him to death, how did John Pinto know them by name? I'm sure they wouldn't have introduced themselves before killing him? I'm a bit wary of believing police versions as the gospel truth nowadays.

John Pinto hails from a poor background. He has 2 brothers and 2 sisters who lead normal lives with their families. I had seen him when he was a child of 6 but later I heard that he was disturbed and out of his family's control. His poor parens, brothers and sisters had tried their best to reform him but all was in vain.

Coming to the way he was killed, should so many hounds be after the blood of a disturbed person? In a country where law is lenient even on murders, illegal amassing of wealth etc. how serious an offence is this to meet such a gory death? If someone's door steps is where he used to spend his nights one can imagine what this poor thief has stolen all his life. Ofcourse with his unsound mind he must have been a nuisance to his neighbourhood. But then, we all are nuisances in one or the other way to our neighbours, if we have the humility to admit our weaknesses.
