Puttur: Yamuna Rai Breathes Her Last

Puttur, May 20: Yamuna Rai (88), mother of renowned folklore scholar and visiting professor of the University of Wurzburg in Germany, Prof B A Vivek Rai, left for heavenly abode on Wednesday May 19 afternoon. She was residing with her daughter at Uppinangady. She is survived by four children including Vivek Rai.

Yamuna Rai was very close to the family of multi-faceted personality and writer, the late Shivaram Karant, and a close confidante of Leela Karant, wife of the writer. She was a talented singer, and could recite verses from Kumaravyasa Bharata and Jaimini Bharata in a melodious and pleasant way. She also had the ability to sing Kannada lyrics, Tulu songs from ‘Kanige’, a collection of songs, as well as Tulu folk songs in her unique style, retaining the richness of the songs. Yamuna Rai was strongly against the caste system prevalent in the society.
