Mangalore, Jun 7: One of the four accused, Abdul Sherif, who were recently arrested by the local policemen for circulating fake currency notes, has escaped from the custody of the policemen. It is learnt that the incident happened near the Bangaladesh border in West Bengal, where he was taken by the policemen to undertake further investigations.

After learning during their interrogation that Malda district was the hub for the generation of fake notes, the policemen led by Barke station sub-inspector, Shivaprakash, a constable from his police station, another policeman from the district crime intelligence bureau and two from the state criminal investigation department, had taken Sherif to West Bengal. Being a native of Malda district, Sherif is said to be well-versed with the region.

It is learnt, that during the train travel, seats are provided as per the norms, and the accused as well as the escorting police constables are provided accommodation in the lowest class of travel. As such, the accused was accompanied by a lone policeman in the second class compartment, when Sheriff wanted to relieve himself, about 100 kms away from his native place, that too, at around 4 am, as the train was approaching a railway station. The policeman waited outside, as Sherif went into the train’s toilet. As the train slowed down at Maori railway station, the accused suddenly came out, pushed the constable aside, jumped down from the slowing train and vanished, it is gathered. It is now felt that it would be almost impossible to nab Sherif again, as the spot he escaped is located very close to Bangaladesh border, where he has lot of friends and supporters, and as the place has been notorious for criminal and illegal activities since long.

Sherif was taken to Kolkota from here on June 1. He was one among the four people from West Bengal, who were taken into custody from a hotel here, for their involvement with fake notes racket.
