Haveri, Jan 9: In a verdict delivered on Thursday, judge of the first additonal district and sessions court here, E Rajeev Gowda, sentenced a person charged with the rape and murder of a girl sltudent of a prestigious college in the city.
Shashi alis Manjunatgouda Shankaragouda Patil from Mannur village in Savanur taluk has been awarded death sentence in the case. He was charged with raping a 17-year-old PU student on August 6, 2018. He was also accused of murdering the girl and then trying to destroy evidence by pouring petrol on the body of the student under the bridge across Varada river and setting it on fire.
Protests were held across the district seeking the arrest of the accused. He was arrested five days after the incident. During the hearing, it was established that he had raped and killed the girl.
