Mangalore, Jun 15: After presiding over a meeting organized at the office of Dakshina Kannada district deputy commissioner here on Monday June 14 towards taking precautionary measures to handle monsoon rains, natural calamity, flood etc., district in-charge minister, Krishna J Palemar, directed the officials to be in readiness to efficiently handle any eventualities that the district might encounter during the rainy season.

District deputy commissioner, V Ponnuraj, briefing the minister about various precautionary steps already taken by the administration, said that district level and taluk level meetings of the officials were conducted, and places which face the threat of floods have been identified in Mangalore and Bantwal taluks, which are comparatively more prone to experience floods. “A detailed natural calamity management plan has been prepared, and two officials to each of the identified zones have been designated to execute this plan. The heads of departments have been instructed not to leave their headquarters during monsoon months,” he explained.

Adding further, he informed that private boats have been identified for pressing them to service in emergencies, and as per plans, five boats in every region will be designated for handling natural calamities. In case of exigencies, to save lives, a list of expert divers has also been prepared, he added. The deputy commissioner instructed the fire brigade and forest department, to take steps to acquire additional machines for cutting trees, as he felt the fire brigade will not be able to cope up with the situation with the only machine they presently possess. He further said that 70 gruel centres in Mangalore taluk and four in Bantwal taluk, have also been identified.

During discussions, the officials of National Highways Authority of India said that the authority has decided to delete the Nantoor fly over plan from the national highway 17 widening project. The minister insisted that Nantoor fly over is the most important link of this project, and that this should be erected at any cost. The deputy commissioner informed that the fly over construction can move ahead now, as the Koraga families living in the area proposed to be acquired, are being shifted elsewhere. The officials said they would bring these facts to the notice of the authority. They also informed that B C Road, Kottara, Suratkal and Kuloor fly overs would be completed by the end of October.

Mr.Vincy & Patrick,It looks your comments are unmatured. When you don't like the person, people always makes the mistake by silly comments. Any development work is not possible instanly.
I do agree the Suratkal-Mangalore highway work was the worst planned one. I am sure still it will take more than 4 years to complete if the works progresses like this. Don't forget the National Highway comes under Central Govt.

Mr.Vincy, you are talking about the road accidents,do you think all this only because of the concreting work?? Mostly all two wheeler accidents. Why? Due to the negligency & rash driving. If you drive a 4 wheel vehicle, you can notice the Two wheelers how they over take from your left side, not following any traffic rules, even with out Helmets. Night time most of the drivers use Head light with straight beem light on. It is funny to see even when they start the vehicle Beem light will be on. Now a days it is very easy to get driving license by bribing. So, poor drivers don't aware of the basic rules.

As per me the Riders & the Traffice system to be blamed first then the unprofessional road work Contractors. Even the respective Departments are equally responssible, coz, there is no supervision from their side. I am sure the Flyover in Suratkal junction won't last for many year due to poor quality.

What PLAN in place are these learned men talking about. A plane crash and 158 victims could not be cared and managed as per the Disaster Management Act. The Minister is in a hurry for maximum media attention whereas the ground realities about the Administration must be seen to be believed.

The minister Krishna J Palemar being from a real estate background should have done the concreting work more effeciently. But he has failed in handling the beautification of south kanara district. See the example of concreting the peripheral roads of Mangalore city. There are more than 50 accidents caused in April-May just because of the concreting work and there are couple of deaths happened before monsoon.
Then you can definitely expect more accidents in the monsoon season. Many roads are done with concrete but the drainage and cable work is not completed so it may result in breaking the concrete slabs to find the old cable or to repair it. The drains are clogged with either with unused cement or by usual dumping.
The short cut road from the city to the airport crossing through Kodial Guthu and Kadri Kambala area where the minister and the authorities convinced few residents for allowing the road margins. Many of the house owners allowed to break their walls and compounds .Some of the residents went to seek a RTI report and found that the road work is done without issuing acquire notice and acquire order is not even issued by the authorities. This means the minister and officers rushed to concrete this road with a purpose which will benefit the minister and the people involved and not the general public.
At present the road is concreted from Bharatha beedi building upto Bejai uphill joining but the footpath is very dangerous through out the distance.

It would have been real shame if Nantoor F/O had indeed to be d for our inability to enable adequate access for the project to progress. Good initiative by Mr. Pakemar.
