Udupi: DC Convenes Meeting to Assess Monsoon Preparedness

Deputy commissioner (DC) Hemalatha convened a meeting on Friday June 18 with the district-level officers to assess the preparedness to combat emergencies arising during the monsoon.
 
She presided over the meeting held at the auditorium of the district headquarters here on Friday.


 
Tahsildar Prasanna said that a taluk-level officers’ meeting had been convened twice already over the issue. “The flood-prone areas across the district have been identified and a plan has been drawn to effectively combat the rising waters”, he added. 
 
Meanwhile, DC Hemalatha advised the officers of various departments to be stationed at the district headquarters throughout the monsoon season.
 
She also directed the officers of the fisheries department to submit to her a list of divers who are ready on call to save people who might be stranded in the event of major floods.

The officers of the Regional Transport Authority were advised by the DC to prepare a list of earthmovers and cranes to clear any trees that fall on major roads across the district and also to retrieve boats that might capsize in the rivulets.
 
The officers of the mini irrigation department said that the vented dams under their jurisdiction had been already opened to allow the flow of excess water during monsoon.
 
DC Hemalatha also advised the district health officers to be on the guard against contagious diseases in case of a major flood during this monsoon season. 

The officers of the agriculture department were advised by the DC to take necessary action at the earliest to assess the loss caused to plantations and crops of farmers affected by floods.
 
The district home guards commandant said that 10 divers and 50 home guards are on standby duty in case of emergencies. 
 
Joint agriculture director B Y Srinivas announced that compensation of Rs 1 lac will be awarded to farmers and agriculture labourers in case of death caused by snake bites and Rs 10,000 in case of destruction of hay and animal fodder by fire.
 
Superintendent of police Praveen Madhukar Pawar, Kundapur sub-division officer B Sadanand Prabhu, municipal commissioner Gokuldas Nayak, and district-level officers were present on the occasion.
