Beltangady, Jun 24:
A leopard which was chasing a puppy fell into a well in Bullekkar, near here, in the wee hours of Wednesday June 23.  It was later rescued with the help of locals and the forest department.

The leopard fell into a well on the property of Subbayya Shetty.  The family woke up at about 4.30 am on Wednesday after their dog started barking in fright.  They saw that a leopard had fallen into the 20-feet deep well.

Shetty informed the forest department on Wednesday morning and the village forestry committee gathered at the location and began the rescue operation.

They lowered a bamboo ladder into the well and the leopard twice attempted to hold on to the ladder and climb to the top.  On its third attempt, the animal succeeded in reaching the mouth of the well and fled towards the nearest forest.

The pet dogs of many households are being targeted as prey by wild animals of late.

The hungry leopards in search of food, venture into households from the jungle.  This incident has occurred at Bullekkar that is just 4 kms from Punjalkatte.
