Mangalore, Jun 25: The police guest house located within the premises of the district police office has been converted into the office of the city police commissioner. It will be inaugurated at 12 pm on Saturday June 26.

Home minister, Dr V S Acharya, district in-charge minister, Krishna Palemar, various people’s representatives, state inspector general and director general of police, Ajai Kumar Singh, and some top officials from the state are expected to participate in the inaugural. The commissionerate, which was officially inaugurated on January 26 this year, was initially headed by western range inspector general of police, Gopal Hosur. Present incumbent, Seemant Kumar Singh, took over charge from Hosur on April 30.

As the construction of a new building for the commissionerate will require long time, it was decided to temporarily modify the police guest house as the office of the city police commissioner. The commissionerate has jurisdiction over 17 police station located within the city, Mulky and Moodbidri divisions. In addition to about 700 police personnel already working in these police stations, the commissionerate will get 800 additional police personnel. Temporarily, the services of around 200 home guards are being availed to cover the shortfall of manpower at present.  Additional superintendent of police, R Ramesh, has already been appointed as the deputy commissioner of police (DCP - law and order), while Mutturaya, appointed as DCP (crime), is expected to take over charge shortly.

In addition to the two DCPs, the commissioner will have five assistant commissioners of police (ACP).  City deputy superintendent of police (in-charge), B J Bhandary, and Panambur DySP, Girish, have already been appointed as ACPs and three remaining posts of ACPs are expected to be filled in course of time.

A separate central crime branch (CCB) is expected to be formed under the commissionerate soon. Police commissioner, Seemant Kumar Singh, said that the new building of the commissionerate will come up at the spot where the office of the district armed reserve force is presently functioning.
