Puttur, Feb 11: A three-year-old male child, abandoned by the mother, has been rescued. During the last two days since this child was found and rescued, neither its mother nor grandmother came forward to claim the boy, it is said. This incident happened at Koltige village in the taluk.

With the timely intervention of some well-meaning locals, the child was rescued. Puttur taluk child development project officer has arranged for taking care of the baby at Ramakrishna Ashram here. The baby is healthy and it is being looked after well. Further steps will be decided by the district level Child Protection unit and children's rights welfare committee.

The child was noticed walking by the roadside near Siddamoole in Koltige tillage alone on February 8. The locals found injury marks on the body of the child, it is said. The locals rescued the child, and a local family provided food and clothes to the child besides taking care of him at their home.

A detailed inquiry revealed that a woman from the locality had driven away from the baby. Her husband, who was of Kerala origin, has distanced himself from the family and the child was living with the mother and grandmother. It is said that angered by some incident, the child was beaten up and driven away. The grandmother of the child had arrived initially to take it back, but the people who had noticed the injury mark refused to send the child with her.

The officials said that neither the mother nor the grandmother of the child could be found at the house. The family lives in very poor conditions in a house which is in shambles. They said that a decision will be taken as the husband of the mother is not supporting the family, duly taking into account legal provisions, and after finding out the mother and assessing her mental condition. They said that investigation about the allegation of having beaten up and driven the child away will also be undertaken.
