Absentee MLAs to Face Speaker’s Wrath

Bangalore, Jun 29, DHNS: Many MLAs ensure that the attendance registers of the Legislature Standing Committees mark them present, even though they are absent at the meetings, Speaker K G Bopaiah has revealed.

In a circular dated June 26, Bopaiah warned that “strict action” would be taken against such members. There are nearly 13 standing committees, and each committee comprise an average 15 members.

“Attendance should not be given to any members after the meeting is postponed due to lack of quorum. Members should not mark their attendance before or after the meeting. It should be followed strictly,” he stated.

The Speaker termed it “a most embarrassing development.”
Of late, the standing committee meetings are being postponed due to lack of quorum. Members arrive at the meetings late. Though there are important issues to be discussed, the members are not concerned, he said.
