Udupi, Jun 30: A parcel of gold worth Rs 36 lac, sent from Bangalore in a private bus to a jewelry shop owner here has reached to him through a different bus raising suspicions.

A Bangalore- based Micro International Company had parceled 20 gold biscuits to the owner of Rajashree Jewelers in the city. The parcel was sent through Durgamba bus on June 23. The next day when the jewelry shop owner received the parcel but when he opened it he was in a shock to see that the bag was filled with stones instead of gold.

The owner soon informed the matter to Bangalore police and complaint was lodged in Sheshadripuram police station. The owner then received his gold parcel from a different byus (Vishal Travels) on June 28 but 2 biscuits were missing.

It is suspected that the culprit must have got a hint about the complaint and hence to escape from the matter he has sent the parcel through Vishal Travels.

Excise and customs superintendent Rajesh and his team are investigating the matter. The questions were raised as to why the jewelry shop owner opted to receive such expensive gold ornaments through a private bus without proper protection. The owner Rajesh Shet maintained that he had purchased the ornaments in a proper way and he has all the proper documents.

@Dave, Durgamba travels has a parcel service with reciept being issued for every transaction. Most probably the jeweller has not informed Durgamba that it contains Gold.If he had disclosed, then instead of Two gold biscuits missing , Two persons would have gone missing along with Gold.

Lydia Lobo, kadri- as u thought it was not sent through courier, but by bus travelling from Bangalore to Udupi. This is the practice of many traders in different commodities as transportation companies donot take any responsibility for valuables lost in transit other than an amount is paid as compensation on the basis of weight of the parcel. Without any documentation traders can avoid taxes this way & can make more profit. The bus drivers & conductors or cleaners pocket this extra earned money, which doesnot go to the bus owners.

How did the courier company (that usually does not accept valuable such as cash to be couriered) accept GOLD as consignment ? What is the coverage if the consignment goes missing ? Why bus is used as a mode of transport than plane while the consignment is so expensive ? Police, you have more to investigate.
